About Us.

We are a small outfit located in suburban Maryland that specializes in the research and sales of Keokuk Geodes. This is our story.

I was born in Missouri and spent many of my days hiking and enjoying the outdoors. Playing in the woods and creeks was second nature to me. My father would take my brother, two sisters, and I on many outdoor adventures where we would collect the treasures we would find. At one point while living in northeast Missouri, my father brought home a rounded rock with a crystalline center and my interest in geodes began.

While attending the University of Central Missouri where I received a Batchelor of Science degree in Geology (Class of 1995), I joined the university’s Geology Club. On one occasion I had the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Keokuk Region to collect geodes. During this trip I was exposed to geode outcrops throughout the entire region. The geode beds were relatively untouched and geodes were plentiful. At this point I was hooked on geodes and have been ever since. I’ve taken many rockhounding trips to collect geodes over the years and have always collected a little extra to sell in order to finance my next adventure.

I now operate a small rock shop out of my home that features minerals, crystals, fossils, and of course geodes. The name of my store is known as MoPops Geodes and Rock Shop. The name MoPops came about as the result of a computer baseball game I used to play with my boys. My sons and I were trying to come up with a name for our team when the brainstorming began. Being from Missouri and affectionately referred to at times as Pops by my boys, we combined parts of the two words and the name MoPops was born. When the time came for choosing a name for my rock shop, it was only fitting and proper that it should be called by the same name.

The goal of this website is to kindle an interest in geodes and geology for rockhounds of all ages. My hope is that by sharing my experiences, and the knowledge I have picked up along the way, I can help others enjoy these treasures and better understand the processes that formed them.
